Dr. Walstrum is a native of Jackson, Michigan, and graduated from high school there. He went on to Wheaton College in Illinois and received a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He completed medical school at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and then a residency in family practice at the University of Illinois, Peoria School of Medicine. He has maintained board certification in family practice since 1980, and he has practiced at the Allegan Medical Clinic since 1980.
He enjoys the opportunity family medicine provides to care for the whole family from newborn infants to those in the golden years. He has a particular interest in health maintenance for people of all ages, including newborns. He also has extensive experience in the care of people with developmental disabilities.
Dr. Walstrum has a strong commitment to providing the highest possible quality of medical care with the most efficient possible use of resources. This interest led to a ten-year term of service on the board of Allegan General Hospital, including a term as chairman of that board.
Dr. Walstrum and his wife Elizabeth have been married since 1975. They have three children, Ben, Thom, and Rebekah. They have been members of First Baptist Church of Allegan for many years. He enjoys the outdoors and participates recreationally in activities such as cross country skiing, bicycling, hiking and kayaking. Allegan and its surroundings provide a very nice opportunity for these, but when he has an opportunity to get out of town, he particularly enjoys traveling to state and national parks.
